Anyone Can Compose! with Aga Serugo-Lugo 

A 2 day workshop on 24th and 25th February, 2024

Our immersive workshop tailored for aspiring composers and songwriters has unlocked the secrets of music creation. Whether participants were seasoned musicians or just beginning their musical journey, instrumentalists or singers, this workshop provided a platform to explore the endless possibilities of musical expression.

Throughout the workshop, participants discovered that anyone can be a composer. Our expert instructors guided them through the fundamentals of composition, breaking down barriers and offering ideas to kickstart their musical journey. From understanding musical structure to crafting their own melodies, attendees engaged in a hands-on experience that encouraged exploration and creativity.

Expression: Participants learned to communicate emotions and thoughts through the language of music.

Boosted Creativity: By creating original compositions and songs, attendees enhanced their problem-solving skills and thought outside the box.

Built Confidence: The workshop instilled confidence in participants, empowering them to share their unique musical voice and embrace their individuality.

Collaborated and Connected: Attendees had the opportunity to collaborate with fellow musicians from their community and beyond, creating music that was unique, special, and timeless.

Fun and Fulfillment: Throughout the workshop, participants experienced the joy of creating something entirely on their own and witnessed the magic of their compositions coming to life.

Aga Serugo-Lugo 

About the artist

Aga Serugo-Lugo is a vocalist, clarinettist, pianist, composer and workshop leader. He sang in the 9-piece Funk band “Gefunkt”, and also composed and played for the jazz-fusion group ‘Eclectiv’. He has a composition degree from University of York. 

Aga has delivered community workshops for Sing-up, Royal Opera House, ENO Engage, Music in Detention, Britten Pears Arts and Turtle Key Arts. He works in Education settings for SEN Schools, Trinity Laban, Pegasus Opera, London Sinfonietta and BBC Proms.

In addition, Aga co-runs Camberwell community choir, is an L and P Ambassador for Britten-Pears arts an assosciate artist for Prime Theatre, Streetwise Opera and the Citizens Of The World Choir.

Aga has been involved in several composition projects involving music for theatre: Street cries of London, Wiltons Music Hall (2009), Verona road, Intermission theatre (2010), The Conspirators project, The Yard (2012), Core Blimey: A Corby Musical (2014) and The Old Man And The Sea (2019), The Winds Of Change (2022), Our Fire (2022)."

 

David Kilgallon

David Kilgallon, a versatile multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer from the Isle of Man, studied composition at York University, specializing in Electroacoustic & Orchestral techniques. He adeptly blends traditional, classical, and electroacoustic styles, collaborating with orchestras, ensembles, and choirs across the UK & Europe. Kilgallon has recently focused on composing for Radio, Video, & Digital Media, contributing to campaigns like the Isle of Man Government's Christmas Shop Local and creating atmospheric soundtracks for tourism initiatives. He produced music for the audio book & podcast "Mona’s Isle" and contributed to a Museum Audio Trail for Hello Little People. Kilgallon founded the Glasgow-based trad sensation "MecLir" and collaborates with fellow Manxman Tomas Callister in a traditional Manx Piano & Fiddle duo. His diverse work extends to projects like Manannan’s Winterfest at the Frank Matcham Gaiety Theatre.

 

DAVE ARMSTRONG

Dave Armstrong, a seasoned musician, filmmaker, and media professional, brings over 25 years of experience to his diverse projects, including music, documentaries, and commercial content. His breakthrough success came with the acclaimed 30-minute drama film GHOSTGIRL. Dave is a versatile contributor to the film industry, excelling in camera work, sound, and post-production. In the music realm, he is a multi-talented musician and producer, collaborating with local artists like Truman Falls and Back Door Slam from his studio in Douglas. Dave directed and co-produced the award-winning documentary, THE WATCHMAKER’S APPRENTICE, which premiered on NETFLIX and showcased the world's greatest watchmakers. Beyond his professional achievements, Dave co-founded the ISLE OF MAN FILM FESTIVAL, attracting high-profile guests. He served on the Isle of Man Arts Council, contributing to local creative community development. Currently, Dave is actively engaged in writing two multi-part screenplays and has just completed his debut novel.

 

BRAD MEECHAN

Brad Meechan is a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist. Brad holds a Songwriting Degree with First Class Honours from the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London.

Brad has worked with a huge variety of bands and artists across all genres. He currently writes and performs with HIGHWAYVES, an artistic collective that combine the  dark aggression of grunge with dreamlike washes reminiscent of shoe-gaze. Lyrics are the key focus of Brad’s writing, with his work being described as intimate, poetic and as personal as they are universal.
